नृसिंह मूर्ती - Nrusinha Idol

भगवद्गीतेत ४ थ्या अध्यायात दोन सर्वश्रुत श्लोक आहेत.

यदा यदा हि धर्मस्य ग्लानिर्भवति भारत।

अभ्युत्थानमधर्मस्य तदात्मानं सृजाम्यहम् ॥

परित्राणाय साधूनां विनाशाय च दुष्कृताम् ।

धर्मसंस्थापनार्थाय सम्भवामि युगे युगे  ||

वरील श्लोकाला अनुसरून सत्ययुगात भगवान विष्णूंनी नृसिंहाचा अवतार घेतला. नृसिंह अवताराची कथा सर्वांना माहित आहेच तरी ती सगळ्यात शेवटी जाणून घेऊ.

विष्णुधर्मोत्तर पुराणात नृसिंह मूर्तीचा उल्लेख पुढीलप्रमाणे आहे. मत्स्य पुराणात थोड वेगळं वर्णन येत.

सिंहासने सुखासान कार्यों न भगवान हरिः ।

ज्वालामुखी के वपुः शंखपमा प्रभुः।

मूर्तिमत् पृथ्वीहस्तन्यस्तपाचौऽथयोत्थितः ।।

शंख चक्र पापद्य लब्धिः कः।

अग्नि ज्वाला कुलावतंस विभूषित कुरुतः।।

थोडक्यात, सुखासनात असणारा, हातात पद्म, शंख,चक्र,गदा धारण केलेला, क्रोधाग्णी, सर्व आभूषणे असलेला नृसिंह असावा.

नृसिंह मूर्तीचे रूप काय आहे यावरून त्याचे प्रकार पडतात. गिरीज नृसिंह, केवल नृसिंह, स्थौण नृसिंह, योग नृसिंह, यानक नृसिंह, विदरण नृसिंह आणि लक्ष्मी नृसिंह आहे काही प्रकार आहेत .

योग नृसिंह

होयसाला साम्राज्यातील बेलवडी या गावात विर नारायण मंदिर आहे. या मंदिरात प्रमुख मूर्ती विर नारायणाची आहे त्याच्या डाव्या बाजूला केवल नृसिंह तर उजव्या बाजूला कृष्णाची मूर्ती आहे. ही कृष्णाची मूर्ती भारतातील सगळ्यात सुंदर मूर्ती आहे.

बेलवडी

सदर मूर्ती योग नृसिंह प्रकारात मोडते. या मूर्ती साठी दगड नेपाळ मधून गंडकी नदीतून आणला. मूर्ती ४ हातांची असून   उत्कुटिकासानात बसली आहे. पायाच्या नडग्या आणि कंबर योगपट्ट्याने आवळून टाकल्या आहेत. दोन हात गुडघ्यावर आहेत तर बाकी दोन हातात चक्र आणि शंख आहे. मोठमोठे बटबटीत डोळे, आयाळ आणि विशाल जबडा भीतीदायक वाटतात.

विदरण नृसिंह

हिरण्यकश्यपू चे पोट फाडताना नृसिंह असेल तर त्याला विदरण नृसिंह म्हणतात.

नरसिंहाकृति वक्ष्ये रौद्रसिंहमुखेक्षणाम् ।

भुजाष्टकसमायुक्तां ध्वजधीनसटाश्रिताम् ॥

हिरण्यकश्यप दैत्य दारयन्ती नखांकुरैः ।

ऊरोरुपरि विन्यस्य खड्गखेटक-धारिणम् ॥

तस्यान मालां निष्कृष्य बाहयुग्गेन बिभ्रतीं ।

आकारं पुरुषस्यैव धारयन्ति मनोहरम् ॥

सध्यस्थिताभ्यां बाहुभ्यां दक्षिणे चक्रपङ्कजे ।

कौमोदकी तथा शह बाहुभ्यामिति वामतः ॥

अधःस्थिताभ्यां बाहुभ्यां दारयन्ती प्रकल्पयेत् | ऊर्ध्वस्थिताभ्यां बाहुभ्यामन्त्रमालां तु बिभतीम् ॥ नीलोत्पलदलच्छायां चञ्चच्चम्पकसप्रभाम् । तप्तकांचनसंकाशां बालार्कसदृशीं लिखेत् ॥

बेलूर च्या चन्नकेश्र्वरास्वामी मंदिरात छताला एक नृसिंह कोरला आहे. छतापासून जवळजवळ २ फूट खाली झुंबर  सोडावं अशी ही नृसिंह मूर्ती आहे.

यात अक्राळविक्राळ तोंड, बटबटीत डोळे,सुंदर मुकुट , आयाळ व मांडीवर हिरण्यकश्यपू दाखविला आहे. नृसिंहा च्या वरील २ हातात हिरण्यकश्यपू च्या आतडी आहेत(साखळी प्रमाणे दिसणाऱ्या). इतर हातात गदा, तलवार, भाला,शंख, चक्र अशा गोष्टी आहेत. हिरण्यकश्यपू ने एका हातात तलवार तर एका हातात ढाल धरली आहे. नृसिंहाने हिरण्यकश्यपू चा एक हात पायाने दाबून धरलेला दिसतो.

मूर्तीचे काम अत्यंत बारीक व सुस्पष्ट आहे.

शृंगेरी

यानक नृसिंह

शेषावर किंवा गरुडावर बसलेल्या नृसिंह मूर्तीला  यानक नृसिंह म्हणतात. असे एक शिल्प बेलूर मध्ये पहावयास मिळाले. हा नृसिंह विदरण नृसिंह असून तो गरुडाच्या पाठीवर आहे असे दिसते. याची इतर सर्व लक्षण विदरण नृसिंह प्रमाणे आहेत तर बाजूच्या नक्षीत विष्णूचे दशावतार कोरले आहेत.

बेलूर

गिरिज नृसिंह

या प्रकारात थोडा गोंधळ आहे. काही लेखकांनी गुहेतून प्रकट झालेला नृसिंह म्हणून याचा उल्लेख केला आहे. अशी मूर्ती मला तरी कुठे पाहायला नाही भेटली. Elements of hindu iconography मध्ये दिलेल्या वर्णनानुसार निरा नृसिंहपुर येथील मूर्ती गिरिज प्रकारातील वाटते.

हे मंदिर अकलूज जवळ निरा नृसिंहपुर येथे आहे व सरदार विचुरकर यांनी मंदिराचा जीर्णोद्धार केला. सदर मूर्ती पिठावर सव्य ललितासनात बसली असून द्विभुज आहे. उजव्या गुडघ्यावर उजवा हात व डाव्या पायाच्या मांडीवर डावा हात आहे. मूर्तीवर सतत झालेल्या वज्रलेप प्रक्रियेमुळे मूर्तीचा हातातील गोष्टी समजत नाहीत.

स्थौण नृसिंह

नृसिंह मूळ रूप म्हणजे स्थौण नृसिंह. जी मूर्ती खांबातून उत्पन्न झाल्याचे दाखवले जाते तिला स्थौण नृसिंह म्हणतात. हंपीच्या विजय विठ्ठल मंदिरात खांबावर स्थौण नृसिंह पाहायला मिळतो. डावीकडे भक्त प्रल्हाद उभा आहे. मध्ये खांब फोडून नृसिंह प्रकट झाला असून तो हिरण्यकश्यपू च्या छातीवर लाथ मारत आहे. नृसिंह सहा हातांचा असून विविध शस्त्र धारण केलेली आहेत.

लक्ष्मी नृसिंह

वामपाश्वें स्थिते चक्र कृष्णवणे सबिन्दुके |

लक्ष्मीनृसिंहो विख्यातो भुक्तिमुक्तिफलप्रदः ||

चक्र धारण करणारी लक्ष्मी नृसिंह मूर्ती मुक्ती आणि फळ देणारी असते. शक्यतो नृसिंहाच्या डाव्या मांडीवर लक्ष्मी बसलेली असते.

हंपीतील सर्वात विलक्षणीय आणि सुंदर शिल्प म्हणजे लक्ष्मी नृसिंह. भगवान विष्णूचा चौथा अवतार म्हणजे नृसिंह. शास्त्रीदृष्ट्या हा नृसिंह योग लक्ष्मी नृसिंह आहे. या मूर्तीची उंची २० फूट आहे. पाच फण्याच्या नागाच्या वेटोळ्यावर नृसिंह बसला आहे तर त्या नागानी आपला ५ मुखांचा फणा देवाच्या  डोक्यावर छत्राप्रमाणे धरला आहे. त्यावर कलात्मक कीर्ती मुख आहे. नृसिंह मूर्ती तशी भयावह वाटते. बटबटीत डोळे आणि तोंडातील कराल सुळे बगून जीव घाबरा होतो. मूर्तीचा मुकुट शोभून दिसतो. नृसिंहाच्या दोन्ही गुडघ्या भोवती योगपट्टा आहे. या नृसिंहा च्या मांडीवर लक्ष्मी ची मूर्ती होती ती मुस्लिम मुर्तिभांजकांनी तोडून टाकली. लक्ष्मीचा हात नृसिंहाच्या डाव्या हाताजवळ दिसतो. इसवी १५२८ मध्ये सम्राट कृष्णदेवराय याच्या आदेशावरून एका विशाल दगडात नृसिंह मूर्ती घडवली. तिची प्रतिष्ठापना आर्यकृष्णभट्ट यांनी केली.

केवल नृसिंह

नार्सिंहकित चक्रं दुर्लभं मानवे|

नृसिंहा ची लक्षण असणारी आणि चक्र धारण करणारी मूर्ती  अती दुर्लभ आहे.

अगदी नावाप्रमाणे केवल नृसिंह म्हणजे ज्यातून कोणतीच क्रिया व्यक्त होत नाही तो. अशा नृसिंह मूर्ती उभ्या किंवा बसलेल्या अवस्थेत असतात.

बेलवडी येथील मंदिराच्या भिंतीवर केवल नृसिंह आहेत. ते स्थानक म्हणजेच उभे असून समपाद उभे आहेत.  हातात चक्र, पद्म ,गदा शंख असून सर्वच अभूषणांनी अलुंकृत आहे.

अशाच मूर्ती बदमिमधील गुहेत व ऐहोळे येथील दुर्गा मंदिरात आहे.

भारवाहक नृसिंह

भारवाहक मूर्ती शक्यतो मंदिराच्या खांबांवर असतात. जणू काही मंदिराच वजन आपल्या अंगावर तोलून धरतात अस दाखवलं जात. बऱ्याच ठिकाणी व्याल, सिंह, युगुल व इतर देवता भारवाहक म्हणून दाखवल्या जातात.

रत्नागिरी जिल्ह्यातील, संगमेश्वर गावात कर्णेश्र्वराचे मंदिर आहे. या मंदिरात दोन ठिकाणी भारवाहक नृसिंह पाहायला मिळतात. मांडीवर हिरण्यकश्यपुला घेऊन त्याचे पोट फाडीत असून वरील दोन हातांनी मंदिराचा भार तोलून धरला आहे असं दाखवलं आहे.

Nrusinha-Idol

There are two Shlokas in the 4th chapter of the Bhagavad Gita.

यदा यदा हि धर्मस्य ग्लानिर्भवति भारत।

According to the above Shkoka, Lord Vishnu took the incarnation of Nrusinha in the Satyayuga. Although everyone knows the story of Nrusinha Avatar, we will finally know it.

The following is the mention of Nrusinha idol in Vishnu Dharmottar Purana. Having a slightly different description in Matsya Purana.

सिंहासने सुखासान कार्यों न भगवान हरिः ।

ज्वालामुखी के वपुः शंखपमा प्रभुः।

मूर्तिमत् पृथ्वीहस्तन्यस्तपाचौऽथयोत्थितः ।।

शंख चक्र पापद्य लब्धिः कः।

In short, there should be Nrusinha who is in Sukhasana, holding Padma, conch, chakra, mace in his hand, Krodhagni, all the ornaments.

Depending on the form of the Nrusinha idol, its type varies. Girij Nrusinha, Kewal Nrusinha, Sthaun Nrusinha, Yoga Nrusinha, Yanak Nrusinha, Vidaran Nrusinha and Lakshmi Nrusinha are some of the types.

Yoga Nrusinha

There is a Veer Narayan temple in the village of Belwadi in the Hoysala kingdom. The main idol in this temple is that of Veer Narayana. On its left side there is Yoga Nrusinha and on the right side there is an idol of Krishna. This idol of Krishna is the most beautiful idol in India.

This idol falls into the category of Yoga Nrusinha. The stone for this idol was brought from Nepal through the Gandaki river. The idol has 4 arms and is sitting in Utkutikasana. The ankles and waist are covered with yoga straps. Two hands are on the knees while the other two hands have a wheel and a conch. The big batty eyes, and huge jaws look scary.

Vidaran Nrusinha

If there is Nrusinha while tearing Hiranyakashyapu's stomach, it is called Vidaran Nrusinha.

नरसिंहाकृति वक्ष्ये रौद्रसिंहमुखेक्षणाम् ।

A Nrusinha is carved on the roof of the Channakeshwaraswamy temple in Belur. This is a Nrusinha idol that should be dropped about 2 feet below the ceiling.

It shows Lion's face, batty eyes, beautiful crown, ayal and hiranyakashyapu on the thigh. In the upper 2 hands of Nrusinha are the intestines of Hiranyakashyapu (looking like a chain). In the other hand there are things like mace, sword, spear, conch, wheel. Hiranyakashyapu is holding a sword in one hand and a shield in the other. Nrusinha is seen holding one of Hiranyakashyapu's hands and feet.

The work of the idol is very fine and clear.

Yanaka Nrusinha

The idol of Nrusinha seated on an eagle is called Yanak Nrusinha. One such sculpture was seen in Belur. This Nrusinha is Vidaran Nrusinha and is seen on the back of an eagle. All the other features of this are similar to Vidaran Nrusinha, while the Dashavatar of Vishnu is engraved on the side.

Girij Nrusinha

There is a bit of confusion in this genre. Some writers have referred to it as the Nrusimha that appeared from the cave. I have never seen such an idol. According to the description given in Elements of hindu iconography, the idol at Nira Nrusinhapur seems to be of Girij type.

This temple is located at Nira Nrusinhapur near Akluj and was renovated by Sardar Vichurkar. The idol is seated on a pedestal and is bisected. The right hand is on the right knee and the left hand is on the thigh of the left foot. Due to the continuous coating process on the idol, the things in the hands of the idol are not understood.

Sthauna Nrusinha

The original form is Sthauna Nrusinha. The idol which is shown to have originated from a pillar is called Sthauna Nrusinha.

In the Vijay Vitthal temple of Hampi, you can see Nrusinha standing on a pillar. To the left stands devotee Pralhad. Nrusinha is seen breaking the pillar and kicking Hiranyakashyapu in the chest. Nrusinha has six arms and holds various weapons.

Laxmi Nrusinha

वामपाश्वें स्थिते चक्र कृष्णवणे सबिन्दुके |

लक्ष्मीनृसिंहो विख्यातो भुक्तिमुक्तिफलप्रदः ||

The idol of Lakshmi Nrusinha, who holds the wheel, is the giver of liberation and fruit. Possibly Lakshmi is sitting on the left thigh of Nrusinha.

The most remarkable and beautiful sculpture in Hampi is Lakshmi Nrusinha. The fourth incarnation of Lord Vishnu is Nrusinha. Scientifically this is a Yoga Lakshmi Nrusinha. The height of this idol is 20 feet. Nrusinha is sitting on the body of the five-headed serpent, while the serpent is holding its five faces like an umbrella over the head of God. It has artistic Kirti-Mukha on it. The Nrusinha idol looks so frightening. We feel frightened by the squinting of eyes and mouth. The crown of the idol looks beautiful. There is a yoga band around both the knees of Nrusinha. The idol of Lakshmi on the lap of this Nrusinha was smashed by Muslims. Lakshmi's hand is seen near Nrusinha's left hand. In 1528 AD, on the orders of Emperor Krishnadevaraya, an idol of Nrusinha was made in a huge stone. It was founded by Aryakrishnabhatt.

Some other Idols

Keval (Simple) Nrusinha

नार्सिंहकित चक्रं दुर्लभं मानवे|

Idols with the symbol of Nrusinha and holding a wheel are very rare.

Just like the name, Nrusinha in the Keval form express no action. Such Nrusinha idols are in a standing or sitting position.

 There are Keval Nrusinh on the wall of the temple at Belwadi. They are in Sampad standing position. In hand are chakras, padmas, maces, conch shells and all are adorned with ornaments.

Similar idols are in the cave at Badami and in the Durga temple at Aihole.

Bharavahak (Bearer) Nrusinha

Bearer idols are probably on the pillars of the temple. It is shown as temple weighed its weight on its bearers body. In many places, Vyaal, lions, twins and other deities are depicted as bearers.

There is a temple of Karneshwar in Sangameshwar village in Ratnagiri district. In this temple, there are two places where the bearer Nrusinha can be seen. Hiranyakashyapula is torn on his thigh and his stomach is torn and it is shown that the upper two hands are holding the weight of the temple.
